Maori Facts (SLJ)

Hey bloggers! Today is day 1 of the Summer Learning Journey. I am doing the very first activity. It is called "A Place To Stand." We have to go on to this link NZ Fun Facts and add your favourite 3 facts.
At the start of the activity, there is a little blurb about Maui and New Zealand. This is the little blurb:
According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This ‘fish’ was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or ‘Māui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or ‘Māui’s canoe’.

My favourite 3 facts were,

1. The Maori name of New Zealand is Aotearoa which means the land of the long white cloud.

2. New Zealand was once governed as part of the territory of New South Wales and later a part of Australia.

3. It is one of the three countries in the world that has two official national anthems of equal standing.  The first is God Save the Queen and the other is God Defend New Zealand.

These facts are all about NZ, they all tell us about New Zealand like the first one. It tells us about what Aotearoa means.
The second one tells us about where New Zealand was onced governed.
Governed means to conduct the policy, actions, and affairs of (a state, organization, or people) with authority.
The third one, the last one. Is talking about the National Anthem, that NZ is one of the official countries with an anthem that is equal standing.

I really enjoyed doing this activity. Can't wait to do more. Please feel free to leave comment or some feedback for me. I can't wait to see some of your work.

  1. Kia ora Lavinia,

Congratulations on completing your very first activity for this years Summer Learning Journey. I am so excited to see so many posts coming through from students in the Ako Hiko cluster. I think we are going to have a big competition for those prizes next year.

You have shared three very fascinating facts about our country, Aotearoa. There was so much I didn't know about our country before reading your post. Such as, that New Zealand was once seen as part of Australia and under their jurisdiction. No wonder people from around the world think that New Zealand is in Australia, once upon a time it was. Do you know when New Zealand broke away from Australia? Maybe you could do some additional research and share it with me.

I did some research and found out the the Declaration of Independence had something to do with this change. This might help your research.

I am really excited to read all of your incredible posts that you have worked on today. Keep up the incredible work Lavinia.

    Kind regards,
    Megan :)
